Sculptor

As an artist I create work that speaks directly about human fragility, which can be interpreted as emotional or physical.

Inspired initially by autobiographical events, I believe that the work is being produced at a time when huge questions of identity are prevalent within our own society. Globalisation, multi-culturism, the breakdown of linguistic and geographical definitions, along with corporate branding and the availability of technology in communication, lead us to all ask who we are.

I have worked in a variety of mediums, however there is a prevalent use of fixing devices - nuts and bolts, thread, and dressmaker’s pins.

As an artist I create work that speaks directly about human fragility, which can be interpreted as emotional or physical. I attempt to unravel some of the complexities of human experience - the challenges we face in life that create anxiety, stress and uncertainty.

Although my practice has developed through autobiographical exploration, I believe that the work has been produced at a time when huge questions of identity are prevalent within our own society. Globalisation, multi-culturism, the breakdown of linguistic and geographical definitions, along with corporate branding and the availability of technology in communication, lead us to all ask who we are. These autobiographical inspirational events are common emotional human experiences and are highly reflective.

I have worked in a variety of mediums and unashamedly admit that I love the challenge of working with new materials. There is a prevalent use of fixing devices - nuts and bolts, steel thread, dressmakers pins and an assortment of fixings used in needlework, sometimes combined in play with one another. Both forms were common objects that surrounded and influenced my own early making. The metaphorical language of materials is integral to the work’s development and final outcome; it acts, as interpreter for abstract visual art forms, supporting mechanisms, balanced or maintained beside fragile forms are prevalent.

I graduated as a Fine Artist in 1996 and then worked in the interior design industry for 7 years where canvas painting was actively encouraged and commissioned regularly. Completing an MA in Art and Design in 2006, I practice as a Fine Artist and teach when availability demands. Establishing a studio base at Barton Hall Studios, I have had numerous successes at open exhibitions, and open studios.
