My
decision to move out of full time employment and in to a more satisfying way
of life took place after experiencing a life changing event which left my
health and life compromised. I had always been interested in design and
creativity. It felt natural to move in to an area which merged the two
together. I went to college to study Decorative Techniques. Interior Design
and Contemporary Crafts to HND standard, after which I was enthused and
ready to explore my own relationship with art.
My artwork is an opportunity to explore my inner feelings and views of my
life and situations within it. It is a form of expression towards issues
that affect me in my day to day living such as emotional responses to
circumstances and visual stimuli.
Texture is very important to me and I use materials that will withstand
manipulation to create the exact texture I want. The surface treatment in
addition is paramount and a key intention to give the textures a certain
feel whether this is illustrated by dark and dramatic colours or soft,
almost misty finishes.
My progress with clay is important, creating work that has a three
dimensional attraction. I combine clay with wire to produce forms of organic
quality. The wire acts in the role of a skeletal system for the clay during
the drying process. As moisture is lost the clay will shrink resulting in a
pleasing combination of cracks and distortions that I find exciting. I also
enjoy using a range if items to use as moulds for producing bowls. Each one
of my bowls are individual and unique in size and form. I use the techniques
of smoke glazing to enhance the surface of the bowls.
My aims are to get bigger with the textured wall mounts, to get to human
size and feel even more part of the work I create and for viewers to have a
human sized experience.
