I
graduated in 1998 from Bretton Hall College, University of Leeds, with a
First Class Honours Degree in fine art painting and printmaking. In 2001 I
completed an MA in fine art at the University of Central England,
Birmingham.
I use a variety of media in my work, painting, collage, photographs and also
3D pieces. Central to all my work is the theme of memory, absence, echoes
and traces. Textiles and the empty garment are my main inspiration.
My work portrays memories of the past, those residues and traces that are
left behind for us to Cherish. I use textiles, particularly the image of the
empty dress as a metaphor for absence. Lace has been featured significantly
in my 2D work, where I have created prints from lace articles.
My photograms produce similar effects capturing ghostly images of garments.
My most recent work is a series of dresses that I have constructed from book
pages and copper wire. Arranged in these garments are remnants and keepsakes
from peoples lives, old photographs, buttons and keys. Lit from within they
cast shadows, whispers of things that cannot be touched.
