After years of raising a family and working, I had the
chance to return to my first love of art. It was at this point I was
fortunate enough to be introduced to life drawing by an extremely
inspirational gentleman. Ever since that very first session of working
from the human figure I have been constantly inspired and challenged by the
complexities the human body can portray. This evolved rapidly through
my studies for my degree to encapsulate three dimensional pieces.
Throughout this work, I have been inspired by light, structure & form as
well as an emotive content which artists like Kathe Kollwitz & Caravaggio
were the masters of.
Far too often the real
beauty which can be found within the figure is lost amidst the complications
of modern life and the stigmas attached to it. It is these simple
natural qualities I have focused on in a variety of mediums. I
consider all of my work to be sculptural, even the traditional two
dimensional format of photography; to me they are frozen sculptures which
use light to accentuate the form and structure.
In the last couple of
years I have become aware that if people took the time to look properly at
their surroundings they would notice that there is a silent conversation
going on all around them; all of the time. It may not be audible, but
through expressions and gestures there are so many things being said, some
of which we don't even know we are saying ourselves. The human body is
capable of communicating in a language that transcends all barriers without
any need for translation, conveying an honesty often hidden by a mask of
words.
Is at all possible to
capture the essence of pose, be it a spiritual aura or the simple form of
body language in a sculpture or a single image that can convey more than
just the positioning of the body? This is something I am striving to
embody, which is set to become a life long quest and something I am using my
study for my Masters to investigate.
