| Experimental mixed media
and ceramic work combining my interest in the fundamentals as a designer /
teacher / gardener. This current body of work
marks my journey from teaching art full time for 20 years to producing my
own work on a regular basis accompanied by part time teaching positions.
During this period other than teaching my main creative output has revolved
around designing and planting a 'White Patio Garden' at my home which has
featured on Channel 4's Gardening Club in 1995. Being a novice gardener, the
guidelines that I followed to create the garden was 'Plant with Contrast'
which I feel contributed considerably to its visual success. Within my role
as a teacher I have come to recognise and install the importance of a
thorough grounding of basic skills both two and three dimensionally. The
design principals with which I created my garden coupled with my exploration
into the basic mark making techniques formed the basis for this body of
work. Through a series of exercises, individual plants were represented by
using a variety of media and technique emphasising their contrasting
qualities. These images were combined and developed to create a series of
compositions, reliefs and vessel forms. A recent position as artist in
residence has allowed me to extend this work in to clay. Again working
through a series of structured stages I have explored different ways of
translating my initial marks into clay using a variety of techniques. This
has resulted in the production of a range of individually decorated tiles
which again have been combined and developed to create a range of ceramic
plaques and platters.
