Ceramics and Glasswork |
 |
From childhood I have always been interested in making
things. As an adult I obtained a job working in a resource centre with scrap
materials. This was a catalyst and the incentive to return to college
and take a creative course. ‘O’ Level, ‘A’ Level, 3 D Degree, Adult Teacher
Training, then in 2007 a one year Professional Development course at the
International Glass Centre, West Midlands.
For 9 years I was employed as a Service Manager operating a ceramics
workshop in a centre that caters for brain injuries, mental health and
learning difficulties. I am a member of local arts groups and chair Access 2
Art, a group of artists that applies for funding to run free workshops for
disadvantaged people of all ages.
I exhibit my work in local galleries, museums, my own studio and unusual
venues such as country parks, churches and shopping centres. The
latter is to take art to a wider audience as I believe there are many people
who never set foot into a gallery.
Most of my work is based on the female form. This started many years ago
when I researched how the media portrayed females and this was quite often
derogatory. I then studied early 20th century artists such as Picasso, Klimt
and Schiele. I looked at how they celebrated women in all their glory.
This released my inhibitions as I realised that artists throughout the ages
have been criticised for eroticism. My work is representational not reality.
It is not meant to offend, but to gain a response - positive or negative is
irrelevant. Just stop and look. |
