My
inspiration comes from immediate experiences of life around me, which I
record initially in sketchbooks. These "memory triggers" allow me to "play"
with the images on a larger scale and with a broader range of media. My
memory, imagination and creative instincts enable me to judge with chance
and intent to develop these initial sketches into a new and varied
progression of personal statements.
As a student of the Royal College of Art, I was drawn to the "glamour" of
the neon lights and nightclubs of the metropolis as a resource to abstract
images / icons from. Later whilst living and painting in Berlin with its
political wall I was inspired in my painting by alluding to the layers of
colourful glamour complemented by the shadows of east / west political
confrontation.
My ideas have often been triggered by issues of varied interpretation such
as distance and nearness in my beach crowd paintings. The presence of the
past in my historical building themes. The beauty of rubbish in my broken
china series and spotlight, centre stage for the unnoticed, still, quiet
corners in my "pond piece" series. Throughout all these themes of work there
is always an over riding aim of the celebration of the medium and its mark
making qualities.
My working methods are varied as I attempt to broaden my awareness of
painting and drawing materials and master their properties to my own ends.
These methods more recently include acrylics as watercolour on canvas, the
use of the Masque pen as a mark maker on canvas and the use of Indian ink as
a large scale, dynamic mark maker for conveying the energy of people playing
in the sea. This has led me to investigate and develop my ideas to a broad
scale, ranging from small scale paintings and drawings to three metre
canvases and multiples thereof, for corporate settings.
